Environmental Stress
Fig. 9 Cattle ranching in the Amazon
The Amazo River may be the greatest river in South America and the Amazon rainforest the largest rainforest in the world, but that does not mean they are impervious to pollution and other environmental threats. The river and the rainforest are closely linked-together they are called the Amazon, after all! But this means that if something happens in one of them, the other will be affected, or they are both affected byu something. For example, if the Amazon river recieves pollution, animals in the rainforest will be affected because they lost one of their main sources for water. so far, over 20% of the Amazon Rainforest has been destroyed. Land is cleared for purposes such as logging, cattle ranching, and agriculture. Also, some of the rainforest is burnt down to make charcoal! Instead of using old, scraps of wood, large, important rainforests are burnt down! It also does not grow back. Once a rainforest has been cut down, it is gone. This does not just impact the river and the animals, it also impacts the indigenous people too, leaving less than 200,000 left. Additionally, the Amazon River has been polluted by humans. The pollution mainly comes from industries, when dangerous materials and landfill waste leaks into the river.
Why do we need the Amazon? What does it matter if it is destroyed? The Amazon is worth so much to our civilization in many different ways. The Amazon provides many over 100 plants that are used in prescription drugs that heal and help us get through our lives. The Amazon rainforest is known as “the lungs of our planet” , and that really is a fact. The Amazon provides us with more than 20% of the Earthès oxygen! Without Amazonia, we lose oxygen, freshwater, and many prescription drugs. (McColl)
Our tour and travel company, Amazing Tours, makes an effort to stay true to the Amazon. All of our trips are neant to be eco-friendly, which means the hotel, the activities, and sometimes even the destination are all eco-friendly. For this trip to a breathtaking river with a matching rainforest, we have made sure that the entire trip is in touch with the environment. We make sure that the tours have a minimal impact on the environment, but do not worry, they are still amazing!
W ays that we are eco-friendly:
Hotel- On this trip you will be staying at the Amazon Ecopark Jungle Lodge, a special, eco-friendly
place to stay
Tree Climbing- For this special activity, only 6 people are allowed to go as a group at a time, so as to
disturb the environment as little, or not at all, as possible
Lake Januari Ecological Park- Visiting an ecological park is like a zoo, except here, the animals are in
their natural habitat
Kayaking Trip- On this little voyage we use kayaks, the boats that affect the environment the
least
Monkey rehabilitation
centre- On the kayaking trip, meet with some monkeys that are sick or injured
and getting better in this ecological
place
Indigenous Peoples- On the kayaking trip, you will also have the chance to meet with some natives,
people who have been living with the environment for
years
