The Amazon River is known as the greatest river of South America, it and its thousands of tributaries pass through Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia,, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. The Amazon River is 6,580 km long and along with its tributaries, drains 7,050,000 square km, or one third of the continent. The depth of the river ranges from 50-91 m, and the width is usually around 1.6 km, though during floodingit can increase rapidly to 56 km wide.
The Amazon River is home to the largest river basin in the world, the basin being two times larger than the next biggest river basin, in the Congo river. The basin in the Amazon covers 7,049,800 square km, and the discharge is 219,000 m every second.
The mouth is also 240 km wide.
